Buena Vista Parents Organization (BVPO)

We are excited to start our school OBOB (Oregon Battle of the Books) competition. We have 32 teams this year, and we hope everyone is ready to compete!

OBOB battles will run on the following dates:

Monday February 4th 8:45am - 11:30am (Pool Play round - 2 battles per team
Friday February 8th from 8:45 - 11:30 (Pool Play round concludes)
Monday February 11th 8:45am - 11:30am (Bracket round - top 16 by score from pool play)
Tuesday February 12th 8:45am - 11:30am (Bracket round concludes)

Championship battle Tuesday, February 19th 1:30 pm (Top 2 teams from bracket round)
This battle will take place in the library but be live streamed to classrooms.

Please note that while you are welcome to come observe your child’s team, we cannot guarantee or predict the time your child will battle due to room and volunteer availability, team availability, and school day schedule. Teams may not have both pool play battles on the first day of competition. For the teams who move on to the bracket round, we use a seeded, double elimination bracket. Teams are not out until they have lost twice. If you do come to watch, please be patient and consider helping.

Volunteers are needed to moderate OBOB battles. We need two people per battle to ask the questions, score, and time. We are looking for 10 people per day. No experience needed, and training will be provided. It's a lot of fun! Sign up using the address below:

You can find practice questions at both the Cedar Mill and Newberg library websites. These are very similar to the official questions and will give teams an idea of what to expect. You can also search on Kahoot and Quizlet for OBOB practice questions and quizzes.

After a question is read, teams have 15 seconds to answer. We strongly recommend all students memorize the titles and authors of the books, even those they have not read. Half of the questions are "In Which Book” style, where the answer will be a title and author.

Still have questions? Please send an email. We are happy to help! Thank you for your support.
