Buena Vista Parents Organization (BVPO)

TOGETHER WE CAN ACCOMPLISH MORE

JUNTOS PODEMOS LOGRAR MÁS

From Ben Temple, President of the Buena Vista Parent Organization.

At the June 5th BVPO meeting, Directora Ibarra announced that Buena Vista will no longer continue to do Fiesta. The primary reasons she gave for this are: 1) Loss of instructional time 2) Fiesta’s educational value not aligning with curriculum goals or state standards, and 3) The additional burden Fiesta places on our teachers.

Directora Ibarra also communicated that with Fiesta removed, teachers will have more opportunity to create their own classroom and/or grade level performance/presentation events that do align with curriculum goals. Teachers have already begun to think about these events for next year.

The loss of Fiesta will be difficult and concerning for some parents. Aside from the disappointment of seeing Fiesta end, some parents will be concerned about what will come next for Buena Vista, in Fiesta’s absence.

Some parents are writing a letter to Buena Vista’s staff and administration. Their goal is to express their enthusiastic support for our staff going forward and also their concerns regarding the loss of Fiesta. During the summer, the letter will be made available for you to read and, if you’d like, to digitally sign.

Fiesta

Fiesta is our annual "All School Cultural Event". This event usually takes place in the Spring and is held in the evening at The Hult Center in Eugene. All the students and teachers participate. Each teacher comes up with a song and dance routine, often with help of parent volunteers, that their students learn and then perform at the event. During the time that students are practicing their dances, they are also learning about the culture their dance originates from. This incorporates both a learning experience in the classroom as well as physical movement and a lot of fun. Students dress up in costumes that represent the cultural dance they are preforming. The day of Fiesta is an all day event. The students are bussed to The Hult Center for a day of rehearsal on the stage and then come back that evening to perform for their parents, families, and friends. There is a lot of work that goes into making this event so amazing. The teachers, the students, and lots of volunteers make this night so incredibly special.
